Criminal Investigation

Criminal Investigators (Detectives) are tasked to investigate violations of the General Statutes of North Carolina. Although Investigators have the primary focus of investigating Felony cases they also investigate a substantial number of Misdemeanor violations. Investigators are responsible for the investigation of crimes against persons, and property crimes. Investigators secure evidence, process crime scenes, apprehend criminal offenders, present evidence and testimony in court, and work closely with the District Attorney’s Office. Investigators are subject to the usual hazards of general law enforcement. Investigators receive numerous hours of specialized investigative training in addition to the Mandated State Training that they are required to attend each year. Investigators work closely with other local, state, and federal law enforcement officers.

Narcotics Officers (Agents) are tasked to investigate violations of the North Carolina General Statutes Chapter 90 which are violations of the North Carolina Controlled Substances Act. These specialized officers also investigate violations of the North Carolina General Statutes Chapter 18 which is the enforcement of the Alcoholic Beverage Laws in North Carolina. Narcotics Officers receive numerous hours of specialized training in addition to the State Mandated Training that they are required to attend each year. Narcotics Officers also work closely with other local, state and federal law officers. Some agents are cross trained as County Alcohol Beverage officers that are responsible for the inspection of alcohol beverage sales outlets. These agents carry out the same duties as a regular narcotics officer with the additional responsibility of alcohol control officers and report violations to the Pender County ABC Board through a contract agreement between the ABC Board and the Sheriff’s Office.
